ALBANY, N.Y. – Hixny recently completed Meaningful Use (MU) Stage 3 certification as a Health Information Services Provider (HISP) of direct secure messaging. This is the last of its three core components certified through the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology (HIT).

This means that eligible healthcare providers connected to Hixny may be able to use that connection to meet federal requirements for the “meaningful use” of health information technology in accordance with the 2015 edition of the ONC’s criteria.

As the only HIE in New York to offer a patient portal, Hixny also has the distinction of becoming the only HIE in the state to offer all three of the certified applications prescribed under MU Stage 3. Previously, Hixny received MU certification for its health information exchange (HIE) provider portal and patient portal.

“While there are internal steps hospitals still have to take to meet the MU requirement, we are pleased to offer an established HIE solution that can help relieve part of the burden,” said Hixny CEO Mark McKinney. “MU requirements continue to evolve, but by having all three of our components certified, we’ve demonstrated that we’re in alignment with the federal government as it moves forward to promote interoperability between HIT systems.”

The organization received entries for each of its three components—its own direct HISP, as well as the HIE and patient portal certified through platform provider InterSystems—on the federal Certified Health IT Product List (CHPL), which recognizes alignment with 18 ONC HIT criteria, including end-user device encryption, auditable events and tamper-resistance, among others.

Recently, Hixny expanded to serve nine additional counties in New York’s Hudson Valley and Southern Tier, committing substantial funding to meet physician demand for more reliable and secure patient information. Earning MU Stage 3 certification supports this demand by ensuring that hospitals in the expanded region can take advantage of their connection to Hixny to advance their own financial and care quality goals.
